My Grandmother's Couch

It was green and fit perfectly in her living room, like the room was built around it. It was always there, for as long as I could remember. We never sat on it, okay well not never. But when people did sit on the couch it looked like they shouldn't be there. We sat on the floor we sat on the other chairs, but never the couch, unless there was a houseful was left empty and alone.

It was green and it had wooden arms with a scroll on them. I remember tracing my finger along that scroll over and over while laying on the carpet in front of it. I remember as a little girl crawling behind that couch and looking for the cat underneath the flap on the front of the couch.

It was green and scratchy. It was almost uncomfortable to sit on that couch. But sometimes I would climb upon it to touch all the handmade pillows that adorned the back of it. The ruffles, the stitching, the flowers, I traced them all with my fingers. They each had a place on the back of the couch and if you moved one she could tell.

Wow, three minutes goes a lot quicker than I thought. These are memories associated with my Grandmother's couch for a writing assignment by the lovely ladies at Hallmark, the lovely Casey and the lovely Stephanie. The title of your post drew me in immediately. I, too, remember my grandmother's couch. I, too, remember the little scrolls. My grandmother has been on my mind a lot lately, and she's been an angel for 28 years. My thoughts of her are always lovely, always warm... and now that I'm a grandmother myself, I know how precious and important it is to have little memories. A couch is a good start! Thank you for sharing!

I almost wrote about my Grandmother's - it was covered in plastic all of my childhood!

There's something about our grandmother's couches that made them all scratchy, but oh, so filled with love, huh?

And the plastic Steph speaks of was on the floor, so we didn't dirty her carpets! LOL

You made me think of my Grandmother's that was "pleather" (vinyl) and was the pull-out that I always had to sleep on. Not to mention it was UG-LY. LOTS of memories!

Thanks for sharing about your Grandmother's couch!

I remember always worrying about making a mess at my grandparent's house when I was younger too. And you know - I hope I'm not like that when I'm a grandma. I hope I can invite the mess that inevitably comes with youth...

I can picture it perfectly. Handmade pillows and all. And the color green - I know just the shade.
